Lung Function Tests (Spirometry)

Lung Function Tests (Spirometry)

Exposure to respiratory inhalants such as dust, fumes and chemicals can be harmful to the lungs and lead to the development of lung disease. It is recommended to health monitoring on any employees exposed to respiratory inhalants like Asbestos or dust, to detect any early signs of ill health or disease due to exposure. Employee lung function testing (Spirometry) is the most common form of respiratory health monitoring in the workplace. It is a quick and painless test where the employee inhales and exhales forcefully into a tube attached to Spirometer. Those employees with below normal results will be referred to the appropriate medical professional for further assessment. A lung function test takes around 15 minutes to complete and is followed by a full report and recommendations.

Hearing Tests (Audiometry)

OHSMED follows the guidelines provided by Worksafe that strongly recommend that companies have a hearing conservation program for those employees exposed to noise. It is recommended to monitor the hearing of all employees exposed to noise levels above 85dB.
At OHSMED your employees' hearing tests are conducted by a qualified Occupational Health Nurse using specialised and calibrated equipment. The test duration is 10-15 minutes and is followed by a full report and recommendations.

Vision Screening

Vision Screening

Good vision can be vital in ensuring the safety of employees. Some occupations such as drivers and machinery (Forklifts, Excavators etc.) operators must meet minimum requirements for vision to be considered fit to perform their job.
Vision screening is performed using a Keystone vision screener. The test includes near and far visual acuity, depth perception, colour vision and peripheral fields. Those with below normal/acceptable vision for their specific role will be referred to the appropriate professional for further assessment. A vision test takes 10 minutes to complete and is followed by a full report and recommendations.

Drug and Alcohol Screening

The health and safety at work act 2015 requires employers and employees to identify risks and eliminate hazards in the workplace. A drug and or alcohol impaired worker is considered a potential hazard. Drug and alcohol screening should be included in the company policy to ensure a safe working environment.

OHSMED can provide onsite urine drug screening and detect substances using a 6 panel drug test.

Alcohol screening is done using an alcohol breathalyser.  OHSMED complies with the unit standard AS/NZ 4308:2008 procedures for specimen collection and the detection and quantification of drugs of abuse in urine. Not negative samples can be sent to the ESR for further testing and confirmations.

Health Monitoring

Health Monitoring

The health and safety at work regulations 2016 (General risk and workplace management), recommends that health monitoring be done on all individuals exposed to potential health hazards.
OHSMED advises employers that if your employees wear personal protective equipment such as a dust mask/respirator or hearing & eye protection for tasks done at work, they are exposed to potential health hazards and therefor health monitoring should be done annually.
Employee health monitoring is done to ensure there is no decline in health following exposure. Results obtained are compared to previous results and should stay the same. Those employees with below normal results are referred to the appropriate medical professional for further assessment.
Health monitoring is tailored to your company and dependent on employee’s specific exposure. It is followed by a full report and recommendations.

Wellness Checks

Wellness checks can be done in the workplace as part of the company wellness program. Wellness checks are also an effective way for companies to express genuine care for their employee’s wellness. A wellness check takes about 15 minutes per person and consist of:

  • Questionnaire

  • Height, weight and body mass index

  • Blood pressure and pulse

  • Blood glucose

  • Cholesterol

A wellness check is a confidential assessment carried out by a nurse. This service creates an opportunity for the employee to discuss health concerns and receive advise on lifestyle changes.

Ergonomic Computer Workstation Assessments

Ergonomic Computer Workstation Assessments

Sitting or standing for prolonged periods can lead to severe discomfort if the computer workstation is not set up correctly. A sub optimal workstation set-up can lead to back and neck discomfort as well as more serious issues such as RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury). OHSMED can help your company prevent these issues, saving you the risk of having to try and treat them later.
OHSMED provide onsite workstation assessments to assess, adjust and give recommendations on computer workstation setup. A workstation assessment takes about 15 minutes to complete depending on individual need and is followed by a full report and recommendations.

There are four types of influenza viruses: A, B, C and D. Human influenza A and B viruses cause seasonal epidemics of disease (known as flu season) almost every winter in New Zealand.

Seasonal flu vaccines are formulated to protect against influenza viruses known to cause epidemics, including: one influenza A(H1N1) virus, one influenza A(H3N2) virus, one influenza B/Victoria lineage virus, and one influenza B/Yamagata lineage virus. Getting a flu vaccine can protect employees against these viruses as well as additional flu viruses that are antigenically similar to the viruses used to make the vaccine.
Influenza (Flu), can easily spread among employees when droplets are generated by sneezing and coughing.

Contact us to get information about this season’s vaccine.
OHSMED can provide onsite workplace vaccinations by a qualified vaccinator.
